I have one exactly month to land a plus-one to a wedding, romantic comedy style. This is not a drill. Caution: things could get messy.

Days 13-16: Trust Your Gut

So, made another poor move and went out AGAIN tonight with Parma.  We had our Clinic tickets to the Indians game, and even though he WORKS for the Clinic, he didn't put it together that we were at a complimentary event with 293852035 of my co-workers.  Whatever.  He can assume I paid for these tickets.  Even after I told him my story about being athletically inept, after getting hit in the glasses with a slow-pitch ball during softball practice in fifth grade, and resigning myself to the New York Times and museums ever since.  My fault.  Fail.

You want to give people the benefit of the doubt, right?  Like, first date was a bust, but "maybe he was nervous," or "maybe the next time will be better."  Definitely not.  Trust your gut.  It's always right.  This guy gets an F.  Second date and all.

My friends diagnosed him as Asperger's, which may have been hasty work-related diagnosing, or actually may have been accurate.  Which is too bad, because now other people can attest to the fact that he looked pretty promising.  I mention potential Asperger's not as a life drawback, but mainly in a socially difficult aspect, and a Wedding Date Prospect will probably need to be able to hold his own for unknown lengths of time with various strangers.  WDP cannot require a social babysitter on the night of August 11th.  And we have no time to waste here, people.

He got us lost on the way back to the car, which is inexcusable, because he had no idea where he was going, and he grew up in Cleveland.  He was like, "This is funny, because you're from Pittsburgh, and you're showing me where to go."  Actually, it's not funny, it's kind of a shame.  And then he proceeded to hold my hand.  And what's the polite way to tell someone you're not really up for holding their hand when they've missed . . .  ALL . . . of the social signals up to this point which blatantly scream, "I'm not actually up for holding your hand."  By the time we got back to the car, you could literally cut the awkwardness with a knife.  I wished it would have gone better, but you can't fake these things -- the chemistry's either there or it's not.

If anyone knows this guy, I kindly ask that you do not show him this blog.  That should go without saying, but seriously, it isn't my intention to hurt anybody or come across as snobby.  It's only that, as women, many of us have been through situations similar to this, and sometimes it's helpful to know you're not the only one.  And sometimes it's a little cathartic to just get it out there and kind of laugh about the total crapshoot that finding your life person can be.  And if you don't find your life person, at least maybe you can find a WDP for three Saturdays from now.
